I am part of a Stephen King book club and for our first book we chose The Shining, mostly because people want to read Doctor Sleep and we felt we all needed a refresher on the main book before jumping into the sequel.
I decided to rent The Shining because it had been at least 20 years since I had seen it and I couldn’t remember much about the film. I have been enjoying Castle Rock and I want to start rewatching and reading King to pick up on all the easter eggs hidden through out it.
So the first thing I noticed while rewatching The Shining Jack Nicholson is terrifying and I would not want to hang out with him. His facial expressions through out the whole film made the mood just that much creepier for me. I love the ambiance music that played at every point during the film. I never saw how crafted the film was when I was a teenager but seeing it now as an adult I can appreciate all the nuances that I didn’t see before.
The Overlook hotel is beautiful and sets a perfect backdrop. I love the fact that you slowly see Jack losing his mind but wonder the entire time if it isn’t really the hotel messing with him. I am very excited for Doctor Sleep and hope we find some time to catch it in theatres if it hasn’t already left.
